Ban On Smoking For Soldiers?

[ Posted in: Reasons To Quit Smoking, Smoking Ban on July 15th, 2009 ]

You’ve seen the iconic picture of a soldier with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, but that could soon be a thing of the past.
The Pentagon is considering a ban on the sale and use of tobacco in the military.

A new study commissioned by the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs recommends a complete ban on tobacco, which would end tobacco sales on military bases and prohibit smoking by anyone in uniform, not even combat troops in the thick of battle.

According to the study, tobacco use impairs military readiness in the short term. Over the long term, it can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. The study also says smokeless tobacco use can lead to oral and pancreatic cancer.

Although I am not a smoker and wish more people would stop smoking, i feel that a huge investment would have to be put into place for the soldiers to stop smoking by using hypnotherapy techniques to not only help them to stop smoking but allow them to channel their frustration into something else

The cost for that would actually be very minimal - especially in comparison to the extremely high cost of treating the soldiers’ (or anyone’s) smoking related diseases.

As a veteran I’m very well aware of the impact of unhealthy lifestyles within the military. Even though a soldier can pass his or her semi-annual physical fitness test and weigh in, this does not mean that they are healthy. The demands related to combat are just too hard on the body to allow the strains of smoking.
